Whether you want to collect data for research, design a test or quiz, design an experiment with your students, or collect departmental data throughout the academic year, Qualtrics will work for you. In this workshop you will learn about Qualtrics, our campus-wide survey platform. You will learn how to set up a survey, distribute a survey to your colleagues, and view the results. If you are already familiar with Google Forms or SurveyMonkey, come learn about Qualtrics to see how this new program might fit your needs.

Collaborative Tools for Learning

Many studies show that collaborative group work aids in student learning, so how and what do we incorporate into our classrooms and our curriculum to help students gain the most benefit? Google Docs, Moodle groups, VoiceThread, and other online collaborative tools can help to facilitate learning outside the classroom. As students share ideas with one another, they gain in understanding of concepts and ideas that were previously unclear, giving them the opportunity to learn while teaching others.

Students today are inundated with technology; so how do we implement technology in meaningful and relevant ways that not only meet student expectations, but help further their level of engagement in learning activities and motivate them to think outside the box? That is exactly what we will discover as we explore the innovative uses of blogs, wikis, social media, chat forums, and mobile technology. Find out why you might want to incorporate some of these into your classes.

Have you thought about incorporating online elements into your course, but are concerned about losing that “personal education” aspect that Centre College beholds? Come explore with us the myriad options for blended learning that use online technology as an enhancement to the course, enabling more focused class time for explanation and active learning. Blended learning can also be referred to as reverse instruction, 24/7 classroom, just-in-time teaching, inverted classroom, or the flipped classroom. By incorporating alternative methods for students to receive lecture and study materials, class time can thrive with group work, collaboration, and insightful discussion.

Are students learning what you think you are teaching? Assessing students in on-going and informal ways offers an opportunity for faculty to gain insight into the current state of students’ knowledge and understanding, and help faculty make informed decisions about their teaching practices. In this workshop, we will discuss how formative classroom assessment techniques can easily be integrated into each class meeting. Technology based and non-technology based techniques will be discussed.

Are you interested in learning about Centre’s online Learning Management System (LMS)? In this workshop, we will cover the basic elements from logging in, adding assignments, enrolling users, and formatting content, to creating quizzes and viewing the gradebook. You will be given an introduction to the layout and tools, then given the opportunity to play in a Moodle Sandbox to get your feet wet in a safe environment. Come join us, get creative, and learn what Moodle can do for your classes.

For many faculty, designing a new course means selecting and organizing relevant readings, plotting the readings onto a calendar, and inserting a few papers or exams. However, this process can feel haphazard and teacher-centered. Designing a new course can be made more manageable and student-centered by focusing on the knowledge, skills, or feelings that one hopes students will take away from the course. In this workshop, we will discuss the logic and process of backward course design, and time will be provided to generate learning outcomes for a course you are developing or restructuring.

Effective assignments support student understanding of course content and skills, and reinforce desired learning outcomes. During this workshop, methods for structuring assignments that motivate student learning will be discussed, and participants will have an opportunity to generate assignment ideas that align with the learning objectives of their own courses.
